It all began in 1953 during a family visit. Agreeing to his father-in-law’s offer, Milton Somberg would assist with overseeing Morris Rothenberg & Son, today now known as Rothco. In due time, Milton would become a pioneer in the Army-Navy surplus industry, all while building the foundations of what Rothco is today.
Starting from a small loft on Great Jones Street in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, NY with a focus on used rags, clothing, and WWII military surplus, Milton learned about the industry from the ground up. Under Milton’s leadership, Rothco adapted when used military goods became scarce, thus evolving into a manufacturer of military inspired clothing and gear, which then in turn would extend into fashion, tactical, work, and outdoor markets.
By the early 1970s, Howard Somberg, Milton’s son, joined the organization, continuing the family business. Honored to work alongside his father for many years, Howard learned how to sail the proverbial ship toward continued success. Howard encouraged the exploration of new ideas and product innovation. For several decades under Howard's leadership, Rothco grew to be the brand you know and love today.
